Discovery: head for the sand dune in Saint-Cyr-sur-Mer!
What is the sand hill of Saint-Cyr?
Sometimes referred to by locals as the " sand hill," sometimes called by purists the "wind dune," it is a pile of sand nestled between the vineyards and the forest of Saint-Cyr-sur-Mer, in the Var region. Admittedly, at first glance, it's a rather unusual landscape. Sandy slopes in the middle of the Mediterranean scrubland—how is that even possible?
Well, this natural formation is the result of a rare geological phenomenon, but not impossible. Over the centuries, the mistral, our favorite wind in the region, has carried sand from Lecques beach and deposited it against the side of this hill. Thus, year after year, grain of sand after grain of sand, the small castle has been transformed into a 220-meter-high dune.
Today, with the hill no longer being fed and erosion doing its job particularly well, it has subsided to an altitude of 120 m. Nevertheless, it remains a valuable witness to our geological history and a refuge for biodiversity.
It must be said that the local flora adapts rather well to the arid soil conditions, and species typical of the Provençal garrigue can be found here. As for fauna, keen observers will be able to spot birds and insects specific to this habitat. It is a setting that must be preserved for future generations, but one that we can still enjoy, with care and respect.
How can you fully explore this wind-blown dune?
The sand hill is a wonderful adventure playground for nature lovers and families looking for an unique outdoor activity. To get there, you will need to park along the road, near a vineyard called " Nartette ." It is here, right next to the vineyards, that you will find the dirt path that will lead you to the foot of the dune. We are counting on you not to cross the vineyard and to respect this private property that delights your taste buds with its aperitifs!
If you are enjoy hiking and walking, we recommend choosing one of the paths that wind around the hill. All of them are visible at the entrance to the site, on a wooden sign. And all of them offer spectacular views of the surrounding landscapes, from Lecques beach to Port d'Alon Bay, via the port of La Madrague and the Var pine forest. The good news is that whether you are a beginner or an avid walker, with adults or children, you are sure to find a suitable route. However, if you are accompanied by a small child, opt for a baby carrier, as a stroller may get stuck in the sand...
For those who are more observant than athletic, you'll also find something to enjoy here. Of course, you'll still have to walk a bit, either by going around the hill to gradually climb the meters in height, or by tackling the dune head-on. Either way, the richness of the local flora and fauna makes it an ideal place for botany enthusiasts and photography lovers. So bring a magnifying glass to examine the plants and binoculars to observe the birds. Several information panels, particularly at the top of the hill (yes, you have to earn it!), tell you more about the history and biodiversity of this site.
Finally, the golden rule in Provence Sud Sainte Baume is to take your time. And there's no reason why this dune should be any different. After a walk, after an encounter with a local species, or even before all that, treat yourself to a break in the sand. Some spots are perfect for a picnic and will shelter you from the summer heat. Whether you choose a view of the sea or the plains, enjoy a moment of relaxation surrounded by nature...
Our tip : for the best experience, visit in spring or fall, when temperatures are pleasant and the light brings out the warm tones of the sand. And whatever the season, remember to wear suitable shoes and bring water with you... it's quite a climb!
An iconic place, filled with memories
Everyone who lives in our destination has memories of this hill. As children, we used to go there to spend Sundays with our families. At the time, there were no wooden barriers to counter erosion and stop our madness. We had a vertical sandy slope in front of us, welcoming us with open arms. Of course, as any self-respecting kid, our favorite game was to race down the dune at full speed with only one challenge: not to fall...
This hill, in addition to being a wonderful place to visit, is also a great spot to watch the sunset. Sitting at the top, you feel like the king of the world with the Mediterranean Sea at your fingertips and the last rays of sunlight reflecting off the sea. The most beautiful spectacle comes when the sun has completely set and the sky lights up with pink hues.
Finally, some also have memories of a first date, a happy announcement, or a moment with loved ones. This dune is more than just a hill; it is a place of life, a human witness to our history for hundreds of years...
So, visitors and vacationers to our beautiful region, come and make memories on this hill unlike any other. Set off to admire the local landscapes, explore the sandy trails, and enjoy moments suspended in time. Your only mission is to ensure, just like us, that respect nature and the dune so that future generations can also come and spend a few hours on this curious geological formation in the Var, steeped in history.
