Why are the Var mountains sometimes closed in summer?

When the sun beats down and the wind blows, Provence can quickly become a giant barbecue. In the Var, the forests are particularly vulnerable for both climatic and structural reasons. Dry vegetation, an alarming lack of annual rainfall, steep terrain, and sometimes difficult access for firefighters... A fire can quickly turn into a nightmare.
That is why, in order to prevent the worst, the Var prefecture implements increased surveillance. This is established according to weather conditions. And depending on the expected forecasts (drought, wind, heat), the department may restrict or even prohibit access to certain mountain ranges until the danger has passed. Obviously, this is not to annoy hikers, but to prevent a small spark from setting off on a hike of its own.
From June 15 to September 15: what are the rules for accessing the Var mountains?
Every day between June 15 and September 15, the prefecture updates the conditions for accessing the forests. The rules apply to all 24 forests in the department, including those we love to explore around Sainte-Baume, Gros Cerveau, and Signes.
Restrictions range from simple vigilance to total prohibition, according to a handy color code:
- 🟢 Green: access is permitted, you can proceed with confidence, but remain cautious.
- 🟡 Yellow: hiking is possible, but avoid the hottest hours of the day and keep an eye on the wind from time to time.
- 🟠 Orange: it's starting to heat up, so it's best to postpone your walk or choose another route in a green mountain range.
- 🔴 Red: stop, access is prohibited. No walking, no mountain biking, no campfires (that goes without saying).
These rules apply to all users, whether they are pedestrians, cyclists, horse riders, or drivers of motorized vehicles. Your dog (always kept on a leash, of course) will also have to wait before stretching its legs, even on the coastal paths!
✅ Good to know: whatever the color, common sense is essential! It is strictly forbidden to smoke in the countryside, throw cigarette butts on the ground, or barbecue in the summer... In short, anything that could start a fire is prohibited and even punishable by law.
Interactive map: check the risk level in real time
You don't need to be a fortune teller to know if your planned outing is possible: an interactive map updated daily is available online the day before for the following day, from 7 p.m.
You can find it on the website of the Var Prefecture or on the very useful www.risque-prevention-incendie.fr/var. At a glance, you can see the risk level for each mountain range, along with the restrictions in force.
It's clear, colorful, and even those who aren't tech-savvy can figure it out. There's no excuse for climbing into the red zone with your picnic.
What are the consequences of not complying with the restrictions?
A restricted trail is not a suggestion. If you decide to ignore the restrictions (even "just for a quick loop"), you are exposing yourself to a hefty fine... and much worse in the event of a fire.
Failure to comply with regulations can result in a fine of up to €750. And if a fire is caused, the consequences can be legal and dramatic. All this not to mention the unnecessary risks you will be taking for yourself, your tribe, and the residents of the area.
In addition to sanctions, there is common sense: every year, acres of land go up in smoke, homes are threatened, and firefighters in the Var region work miracles to limit the damage. It's best not to make their job any harder.
What alternatives are there when the mountains are closed?
Is your desired hiking trail closed? Don't panic, there's plenty to keep you busy in the region without playing with fire. Here are a few ideas that are 100% Provence Sud Sainte Baume compatible with red or black days:
- Relaxing by the sea : treat yourself to a well-deserved swim in this heat!
- Cultural visits: museums, hilltop villages, wine cellars ... You'll be spoiled for choice without even putting on your sneakers.
- Water sports : paddleboarding, kayaking, jet skiing... When the temperature rises, cool off in the sea.
- Provençal markets : local vegetables, cheeses, olives, and a guaranteed local atmosphere—safe and no cooking required!
- Moments of refreshment: shady parks, quiet terraces, reading by the fountain... relaxation and unwinding are also activities in their own right!
Finally, rest assured, the mountains are not closed all the time. By keeping an eye on the map, you are sure to find a green or yellow day during the week for your next outing in nature.
Practical information: how to stay informed throughout the summer?
Here are some good habits to adopt in order to keep track of the situation on a daily basis:
- View the interactive map every evening after 6 p.m. to plan your day ahead.
- Ask for advice from the tourist office of the town where you will be hiking.
- Listen to local news and follow social media of the Var prefecture.
- Observe the signage on site, as information signs are installed at the entry points to the mountains.
And if you have any doubts, postpone your outing or opt for a risk-free activity. The forest will thank you, and so will the firefighters!
Summer in the Var is beautiful and warm... but it can quickly become scorching. By following the rules for accessing forests between June 15 and September 15, you are helping to protect our natural heritage. No need to play the hero or the rebellious tourist: just a quick click on the map, a little vigilance, and you're all set for trouble-free, smoke-free walks.
