What to do in Riboux?

1. Explore the trails of Sainte-Baume

Hiking in Riboux

Close your eyes. Can you hear the crunch of footsteps on the earth and the birds singing their hearts out? Can you smell the delicious scent of wild thyme and rosemary? In Riboux, the trails climb the hills and forests, winding their way between holm oaks and white rockroses... A change of scenery and a chance to disconnect guaranteed!

🎒 The favorite hikes of the locals:

  • For Sunday strollers: the path to Pé de la Colle and Vallon de Trébuquet (11 km, 146 m elevation gain, 3.5 hours walking time). An immediate immersion in Provençal flora that feels like stepping into a Marcel Pagnol film.
  • For experienced hikers : Sainte-Baume from Riboux with a stop at Saint-Pilon (14 km, 539 m elevation gain, 5.5-hour hike). A hike to the legendary chapel in the area for 360° panoramic views.
  • For the more athletic: the Pic de Bertagne (15 km, 549 m elevation gain, approx. 6 hours walking). The highest point of Sainte-Baume, this challenging hike will take you to new heights where you can admire the surrounding area.

A little insider tip: to enjoy the extraordinary landscapes, set off early, when the light is still gently caressing the ridges and silence reigns supreme. And of course, always take a hat, fresh water, and a fierce desire to be amazed with you!

2. Enjoy some fresh air with your family

Riboux with the family

Here, luxury is simplicity. We spread out a checkered tablecloth in the shade of a pine tree, unpack a few juicy tomatoes and a piece of bread, and it's a feast. The children run among the lavender, ride their bikes on the grass, and climb trees... We watch a butterfly land, we make a herbarium, build huts with three branches and lots of imagination. In short, we simply live!

Whether it's during the winter, spring, summer, or even fall break, take your whole family to the northern part of our country. You'll be giving them something precious in these times: a return to the simple pleasures of life...

Good to know: an article dedicated to activities for children is published on our website before each school vacation period. Be sure to check it out before you visit us!

3. Admire the sunset at the Saint-Pilon Chapel

Saint-Pilon Chapel

From the heights of Sainte-Baume, the Saint-Pilon chapel offers a breathtaking panorama. When the sun sets behind the ridges, everything is bathed in a golden, almost unreal light. This isolated, even mystical place inspires silence and elevation. You climb up on foot, in contemplation, and come back down changed and with your eyes full of landscapes.

⚠️ A spectacle of sounds (crickets and cicadas singing their hearts out) and lights that we recommend to all experienced hikers. Indeed, as the cliff walls on which the chapel stands are rocky and somewhat vertiginous, you should ONLY venture there at the end of the day if you have carefully studied the terrain. Furthermore, the idea of watching the sunset from the summit is not recommended for families.

Our photo tip: arrive 30 minutes before sunset to capture the changing light. Wear sturdy shoes, bring a torch for the return journey, and always respect the peace and quiet of the area.

4. Meditate at the Chapel of Saint Agatha

Saint Agatha Riboux

On the hillsides of Provence, in this smallest village in the Var region, the Sainte-Agathe chapel seems to beat to the rhythm of the heart of Riboux. Modest, simple, peaceful... it silently holds a thousand stories. As its name suggests, this charming building is dedicated to the patron saint of the village, known for her strong character and unwavering faith.

Built in the 12th century and carefully restored, it is now a refuge for those seeking a little peace. If this is you, or if you are someone who loves local heritage and magnificent religious buildings, we can only advise you to take a trip to this pretty chapel...

And what about the celebrations? Every year in February, all Ribousians celebrate with joy and cheer Sainte-Agathe. An authentic, traditional event typical of Provence, which everyone, residents and visitors alike, is invited to celebrate!

5. Sample a Provençal specialty at the Bistrot de Pays

Riboux Country Bistro

A glass of pastis clinking on the table, the song of cicadas in the background, and that sweet southern accent: "So, you'll be tempted by the daube, won't you?" With its quintessential Var dish and, above all, its specialty, the Bistrot de Pays de Riboux welcomes you all year round (except in August) to serve you the authentic flavors of the region.

In this establishment, which serves as both a restaurant and an improvised tourist office, the food is lovingly prepared, local produce is showcased, and the welcome is like being at home. People come here for wild boar stew, roast lamb, Provençal pieds paquets (tripe stew), or simply to drink a grenadine in the shade of the pine trees... In short, here, they don't just cook, they tell the story of Provence with every bite!

Some practical information about Riboux

Sunset over the Sainte-Baume massif

  • How to get to Riboux? For the moment, only your car can take you there along charming Provençal roads. As for parking, a large free car park is available at the entrance to the village.
  • When to visit Riboux? Although this village can be visited all year round, we must admit that we prefer spring. It's a magical time of year when nature awakens and the flowers bloom!
  • One last tip for the road? Depending on where you go around Riboux, especially on beautiful trails, you may find yourself without cell service. As we mentioned earlier, disconnecting is the name of the game here! So remember to bring a paper map or download the routes to your phone.

Breaking news: From June to September, the Var prefecture issues a daily fire risk map for the mountains. And since Riboux is located in the middle of the hills, your hiking options may be limited and access may be restricted. So, before you set off, check the official department map

🍃 As you can see, Riboux is tiny but packed with emotion. A haven of peace and authenticity. Here, we slow down, breathe, and listen. We remember what it feels like to simply feel good. All of this, this spirit, this art of living, is of course reflected in activities where slow tourism is king and nature is queen!
