St. Eloi Festival
Who was Saint Éloi in Provence Sud Sainte Baume?
Saint Éloi is an emblematic figure in Provencal traditions. Since the 7th century, this patron saint has been known as the protector of farriers, blacksmiths and other metalworkers. A talented craftsman, Saint Éloi won the confidence of King Dagobert by making precious objects, before becoming bishop of Noyon. In Provencal culture, he symbolizes manual labor, honesty and dedication, values held dear by the region's residents.
Festivals in his honor have been celebrated throughout Provence for hundreds of years. They mark the deep bond that unites the inhabitants with rural life and the world of agriculture. The parades and the blessing of the animals are high points, when villagers express their respect for tradition and pay tribute to the horses that were once essential to daily life in the countryside. Today, this festival perpetuates the heritage of a Provence attached to its roots and ancient trades.
