From the Tauroentum legend to the Villa Maritima

Legend has it that the Greek city of Tauroentum, which disappeared "beneath the waves" in the 3rd century, was located on the Museum's present-day site. The site also bears witness to a major Roman settlement from the 1st century onwards, with some 2,000 people living in a huge villa maritima. Today, the Museum houses three rooms displaying a large collection of objects found in situ: amphorae, coins, glassware... and a remarkable collection of burials.

Since 2022, the Tauroentum museum has been undergoing a major renovation, involving the fitting-out of the public reception building, the consolidation, protection and restoration of part of the remains, as well as the enhancement of the outdoor facilities, the pedestrian walkway and the open-air theater.
