Chapel Saint-Roch

This chapel is dedicated to Saint-Roch in gratitude for having spared Saint-Nazaire from the plague epidemic of 1664.

Description

We can thus understand the location of this chapel, at one of the most important crossroads of Saint-Nazaire, but outside the village. It is a place of encounter and passage, especially for pilgrims whether they go to Sainte-Baume, or leave for Santiago de Compostela.
A small chapel typically Provençal, built in lime mortar. Sold as a national property, then bought in 1817 by the rector and restored by volunteers from the factory council, it was returned to worship in 1819. It served as a repository for the victims of the 1944 bombings.
In 1994, it was rebuilt identically, respecting its proportions, its door, its two windows and its bell tower. The current bell was melted in Hérépian in the Hérault region and installed in 1986. It contains a baroque altar and a reliquary bust of Saint Roch.
